Skills Development Workshop for Educational and Artistic Directors

In 2010, FEDEC launched a reflection process and a network consultation about Educational and Artistic Directors' skills.

This work led to MAILLONS, a programme of workshops aimed at enhancing the skills of Educational and Artistic Directors of FEDEC schools, to be implemented from 2011 to 2013. This programme is made up of:

2011: MAILLONS 01: Ethics and deontology in education
2012: MAILLONS 02: Developing an artistic and educational project
2013: MAILLONS 03: Designing and managing creative projects

MAILLONS 01: Ethics and deontology in education

The first workshop was held in late April, in the frameworkf of FEDEC's second Annual Conference. Marc Lévêque, psychologist and professor at the University of Orléans (France), specialises in psychological support of top-level athletes and teacher-training, was invited to speak on the topic of "Ethics and Deontology in Education".

This initial speech was the starting point for work and discussion between peers and with the teaching body in each school. It also started an initial focus on joint tools to be designed, which gave rise to the "Charter on Ethics and Deontology" for FEDEC schools.

Educational directors from FEDEC schools identified various main areas of work for the Charter, followed by an internal consultation with their educational teams to look more closely and reflect upon the topic of ethics and deontology in education, based on their teaching experience in circus arts education.

The 2nd part of the MAILLONS 01 Workshop, organised during the FEDEC Encounters at the Circa Festival at the end of October 2011, provided an opportunity for each educational team to present their contribution and also share methods and tools currently used in schools to regulate ethical and deontological issues.

Marc Lévêque, the associate expert for the project, proposed an initial version of the Charter to the network based on contributions from schools and network discussions. It was validated at the 3rd FEDEC Internal Conference in Berlin on April 27th, 2012.

The consultation and enthusiasm in the network generated by this first Workshop enabled the school network to reflect on this subject together and reach a joint position on ethics and deontology.

The network now has a joint tool arising from this consultation: the first Charter on Ethics and Deontology, which consists of recommendations and non-binding principles, allowing each school to take up its content and breathe life into it through its educational project.

The next MAILLONS Workshops will provide opportunities for exchanging ideas on the various ways the Charter can be put into practice and the issues they could raise in schools.

MAILLONS 02: Educational and artistic projects and education and training programmes

The MAILLONS 02 workshop was launched, at the end of April 2012, on the fringes of the FEDEC Internal Conference in Berlin.

This first session took the form of a round table on the issue of "Artistic education, an issue and a tool for the circus of tomorrow?”. The variety of standpoints and the wealth of discussion and questions raised demonstrated members' needs and expectations on this subject, as well as the specific challenges of circus education today.

This work was continued during a second workshop on the same topic held during the FEDEC Encounters at Circa in October, 2012 in Auch (France).
