Copenhagen Contemporary Circus College

Higher school

FEDEC member since 2026

The Copenhagen Contemporary Circus College (CCCC) was founded with the ambition to contribute to the development of contemporary circus as both an artistic field and an educational practice in Denmark. It responds to a need for a higher-level programme that connects artistic practice, pedagogy, and professional integration.

The pedagogical approach at CCCC is grounded in physical learning, embodied knowledge, and long-term artistic development. Particular emphasis is placed on connecting theoretical studies directly to physical practice, ensuring that reflection, analysis, and contextual understanding remain rooted in embodied experience.

As a newly established circus education, the school is committed to facilitating a learning environment in which each student takes active responsibility for their own learning process. Students are encouraged to shape their artistic development through inquiry, experimentation, and self-directed practice.

The school cultivates a learning space where dialogue, questioning, and exchange are integral to daily practice. The teaching team is understood as facilitators rather than traditional instructors, reflecting an ongoing exploration of the pedagogical relationship between guidance, autonomy, and shared responsibility.

The pedagogical framework is informed by the school’s manifesto “Dare to Move”, which articulates the values and artistic principles guiding how students and staff learn, work, and create together.

Training offered

CCCC offers a full-time, three-year programme at BA level within contemporary circus. The programme combines intensive physical training, artistic development, theoretical reflection, and professional preparation.

The overall goals of the programme are to:

  • Develop a high level of physical and technical competence
  • Support the emergence of an individual artistic voice
  • Foster reflective and critical thinking in relation to artistic practice
  • Prepare students for sustainable professional careers in the performing arts field

The curriculum is organised through a progression of subject modules and project modules, supporting students’ development from foundational skills and embodied knowledge towards artistic authorship and professional independence.

Learning activities include daily physical training, technical classes, creative laboratories, artistic projects, theoretical studies, and collaborative processes. In addition, the school aims to develop complementary activities such as preparatory courses, workshops, and lifelong learning formats in collaboration with external partners.

Encounters with an audience are considered a central pedagogical tool. Public showings and presentations are integrated throughout the programme, allowing students to develop their artistic voice in direct relation to a live audience and to build professional awareness over time.

Evaluation is understood as a continuous and formative process, including ongoing feedback from 4 facilitators, peer dialogue, and self-reflection, as well as periodic assessments supporting individual progression.
